Reading & Spelling Success for the Student with Dyslexia

Frequently Asked Questions
The Barton Reading & Spelling System is derived from the Orton Gillingham method of teaching children to read.
This 1:1 method provides instruction in a structured manner, using multi-sensory methods and intellect that allow children with dyslexia to absorb and make sense of how our language system works. No more confusion! It is evidence-based, having been proven to be highly successful with remediating dyslexia for the past 30 years.
Once a book of lessons is complete, a post-test is given to ensure that the information taught is solid and understood. My families are kept up to date on progress on a regular basis.
Improvements in reading (decoding) and spelling (encoding) skills can be recognized in approximately *3 - 6 months with our work together. Both Reading and Spelling skills go hand-in-hand and I provide them both in the Barton System.
Significant progress and increased confidence in reading and spelling can occur in approximately *12 - 18 months.
*Because each child is unique, these numbers are subjective. I move through the Barton System at a rate that ensures that each lesson is mastered completely. Each lesson lays the foundation for the next lesson.
Yes! Many of my families prefer online, as it is efficient, removing the added time, inconvenience and frustration of commuting, often at a busy time of day. Less exposure to illness as well...everyone stays healthier! A comfortable environment conducive to learning can be provided right from home. The results are consistently great!
I utilize an online platform that allows my remote students to participate live with me, moving letter tiles on the screen as well as completing explicit exercises with ease. I incorporate a wide variety of educational games to test drive new concepts that we are working on.
Do I offer in-person? Yes, I offer a limited number of in-person sessions as well as a hybrid option that allows mostly online sessions interspersed with some in-person sessions.
A list if offered with the components necessary to hold successful sessions from home; you can find it HERE.
At least one month is suggested to experience the program before making a decision to stop services. This allows both myself and the student sufficient time to connect and get into a rhythm with the program.
We can stop services if it is not the right fit by providing at least two weeks prior to the end of the pre-invoiced month.
Per the Tutoring Agreement, refunds will not be provided for the final month when stopping services for any reason.
Contact me and we can set up a date for a Zoom call or phone call to discuss how I can assist you and your child best. We can look at the schedule and secure the days and times.
Provide for me any school reports, diagnostic reports/assessments, IEP or 504 info that you are willing to share, as they will give me the background information I need. I will then get to you the SkyWord Tutoring Agreement, an Intake Form to fill out, as well as some other great information to help make things run smoothly during our time together.
You will be provide an invitation for the Student Portal, where you can stay updated and informed on your child's attendance, communicate with me, view the monthly session calendar and much more!
Easy invoicing will happen here as well!
Ready, Set....Go!
It is really a great program...one that serves students with a variety of reading challenges and with dyslexia specifically. Perhaps your child has an expressive or receptive language disorder, or other challenges? Please share these challenges with me and we can discuss how to move forward.
