Success from the Field

It is October 12, that time of year which results in the beginning of first-quarter school reports from the public or private schools that many of my students attend.
One of "my moms" just forwarded to me the general report overview from her daughter's teacher. Daughter has been with me for about 1 - 1/2 years and is in fifth grade.
She started with me as a hesitant reader, struggling a bit with fluency and spelling. Her scores were low in the realm of reading, and we started in together with the Barton Reading and Spelling System. I had worked with her older brother as well. A wonderful family.
The report from her teacher was positive and was this:
"She has improved drastically in her reading speed from last year. Last year, she started the year at 32 correct words per minute and this year thus far is at 122 correct words per minute in a standardized reading assessment."
Fluency is on deck!
"Her fluency and speed are still a bit lower than average, but are improving. She is at the 34th percentile, just slightly lower than average. She can keep up with group reading now and her confidence is building. It has not quite hit her that she is a good reader...she still believes that she is not a good reader. But her progress is proving her wrong!"
"She is in the 84th percentile in comprehension, 50th percentile is average.
Her vocabulary is at the 94th percentile, which is well above average for a 5th grade student (both she and her brother have excellent vocabulary to begin with)."
This kind of improvement warms my heart and makes me proud of her for all the effort she has put into our twice-per-week sessions. Accolades to her teacher as well. It takes a village for sure! I so enjoy being part of this village....
Have a great Sunday....K
